Combinatorial and high-throughput methods have had an enormous impact in the field of pharmaceutical research in the last decade. A large number of potentially active compounds has been synthesized and screened automatically leading to faster drug discovery. Combinatorial methods were also introduced to materials research during the last decade. Combinatorial and parallel synthesis in combination with fast screening techniques have been applied to the field of catalysis, to the preparation of luminescent materials and, very recently, to selected areas of polymer research. Polymer chemistry is very well suitable for combinatorial approaches due to the broad range of parameters that can be varied systematically, e.g., monomers, initiators, catalysts, controlled or not controlled conditions, targeted molecular weights, and block, graft or star-like structures.
 

Chemspeed ASW 2000 Automated Synthesis Workstation

This workstation is based on a Gilson XL233 sample processor platform which is equipped with 2 syringes (1 mL and 10 mL) for liquid handling. The ASW 2000 can deliver reagents while shaking/vortexing (up to 1,400 rpms), cooling and heating (-70 °C to 150 °C). This workstations allow the following on-line processes: solvent evaporation, filtration, TLC to spot up to 32 reactions, and Rheodyne valves to interface with HPLC or HPLC/MS systems. The workstation also has an output to 96 deep-well plates. In addition to the above features, the ASW 2000 system comes with a hood and trolley for mobility and inert atmosphere inside the hood, can take up to 5 Chemspeed's reaction blocks to run up to 80 reactions in parallel with an option to go up to 144 runs/cycle, capable of handling both slurries and suspensions, and can accommodate a 160-vial rack (8 ml septa sealed) for reagent storage (other customized racks are available). The ASW 2000 system is a fully automated system for unattended parallel synthesis, reagent preparation, product analysis and purification. The Chemspeed Swave is a microwave-assisted synthesis workflow robotic platform. Everything can be performed on the same platform, from: dispensing of solid & liquid reagents & solvents under inert atmosphere, capping / crimping, vial gripping and transfer, sampling, and work-up and purification of reaction mixtures. The Chemspeed Swave is equipped with a Biotage Initiator™ Single mode microwave system with uniform heat distribution, and accurate temperature and pressure control. The exchangeable robotic tools are: Solid Dosing Unit (Overhead gravimetric dispensing of powders and solids), 4-Needlehead (Liquid handling powered by 4 syringe pumps (1, 10, or 25ml). The Chemspeed Autoplant is a workstations targeting solutions for Process R&D, Polymer Synthesis and Preparative Synthesis. The available robotic tools include a Gravimetric Overhead solid / liquid / gas / vacuum supply, Interface to various in-situ probes, for example, pH, UV-VIS, IR, Raman, Heating / cooling, Overhead magnetically coupled stirring, Calorimetry data, and Viscosimetry data. The autoplant is equipped with so called Miniplant units.
